new goals in creativity

Hand lettering and calligraphy
Someone once said it’s important to tell your friends what your goals are, so you have someone to keep asking you whether you’ve reached them or not. In light of my recent business endeavors – some of which have taken me a bit away from my original goal of creating something myself, see my “plate spinner” blog post – I think it would be a good idea to solemnly declare what my goals are. To you, my internet friends.

Hand lettered prints
One of the things I’ll be releasing soon: hand-lettered quotes as prints. These will be hand picked, and then of course hand lettered and digitized by me. I took a first step towards this goal when I took part in the hand-lettering workshop “Love Letters” in Vienna. The result of this workshop is a piece of a love letter by Balzac, hand lettered by myself and each workshop participant, which will be released in a book. I’ll keep you posted on that.

Calligraphy
Now, I’m lucky enough to live in a town that’s quite large, yet can seem very small at times. People here are friendly and appreciate neighborly help and recommendations. Some friends of mine who own a restaurant heard about my first steps in hand-lettering and approached me as a designer. They would like some hand-lettered quotes and calligraphic letters as wall decorations for their restaurant.

So, even though I have been focusing on hand lettering in private, I jumped at the chance to work with calligraphy on a professional level. (For those of you who are curious: hand-lettering consists of built-up, drawn letters, usually sketched in pencil beforehand, while calligraphy describes the art of writing in flowing, connected strokes, usually working directly with ink. Here’s a simple illustration to show the difference.)

This project has evolved a bit since my first briefing and might not even come into being in the form it is now.
Nevertheless, I’ve worked on calligraphy in a professional capacity for the first time now. So here’s a sneak peak at my first ‘achievement’ as a freelance lettering & calligraphy artist. More work will follow soon, stay tuned!
(Now that I’ve proclaimed it so exuberantly, I have no choice but to follow through!)
