simple = good

first English quote … on food
As you may know if you read the past few blog posts, the restaurant die Wilderin suggested a handful of quotes for me to choose from for the regular hand-lettered prints they want hung in their restaurant. Since the last two prints were of German quotes, this time around, I decided to choose an English quote. And, after the last two prints were a bit more straightforward layout-wise, I also decided to play with letterforms and layout a bit more in this one.

good food is simple food
The quote is, of course, about the simplicity of food. And that’s not to say a recipe can’t be extravagant or experimental – that’s to say that if the quality of the food is simply good, so is the dish.

draw them, draw them, draw them again
Concerning layout, it was a challenge to balance the relatively short word ‘good’ in the beginning of the quote with the end, which I knew from the outset I wanted to be ‘simple food’ as a complete concept. After searching my Pinterest boards and lettering books for inspiration, however, I found a few layouts that included aspects I incorporated into my own print.
After that, it was pretty simple: find letterforms to fit the layout; place them together, see if they fit; draw them, draw them, draw them again; adjust the layout; ink the layout; and finalize the piece on the hand-made paper supplied by the client.

To see the original and have some good, simple food, swing by die Wilderin. Enjoy!
